| A Brief History of Phone Carriers in the USA.
The history of phone carriers in the United States is intertwined with the development of the telecommunications industry. It all began with the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. The Bell Telephone Company, established by Bell and his associates, dominated the early years of telephone service in the USA. This monopoly was eventually broken up, leading to the creation of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885. For much of the 20th century, AT&T held a virtual stranglehold on the telephone industry, providing both local and long-distance service across the nation. However, this monopoly was challenged in the 1980s when the U.S. government initiated a series of antitrust actions. This led to the divestiture of AT&T in 1984, spawning a multitude of regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs) and paving the way for increased competition in the telecommunications sector. |
